Kevin Pearce – Snowboarding Injury

January 14th, 2010 Kyle Barnoff ActionSportsBlips: vote it up! No comments

Injury is tough and a certainty in ‘Action Sports’. Severe neurological injuries are the most unfortunate but occur none the less. Even with the use of helmets, there is still a risk of Spinal Cord and Brain Injuries. Pearce’s case is one example of an unfortunate injury in snowboarding.

Kevin hit his head while practicing at Park City in the pipe, reportedly while doing a double cork. He has suffered a Brain Injury of which the long term effects are not known. He has been showing improvements since the accident on Dec. 31st, and his family has been providing updates on a Facebook Fan Page. If you would like to help Kevin, leave a message on the fan page. You will be giving support to his family who are most influential in his recovery during his early stages.

He has been making very good progress. I hope his outcome is good and continues on the track he is currently on. We wish for the best… may his youth lead him to a speedy recovery!

Ruby Hill Rail Yard – Denver, Colorado

January 13th, 2010 Kyle Barnoff ActionSportsBlips: vote it up! No comments

I hit up the Rail Yard at Ruby Hill in Denver, Colorado on Jan. 9th! The set up is basic but fun, and most important free! Yes, Denver teamed up with Christy sports to make the rail yard free and available to the public. They have a plethora of wide ride on boxes, but they have two urban set ups that are okay. The rails are maintained by volunteers who were really cool and fun to ride with.

It does not have a great amount of variety, but it is close and good for getting comfortable trying small stuff like switch on, unnatural spinning simple lip slides and the like… Check out the video of Ruby Hill Rail Yard, Denver, Colorado to see what it looks like!

Project X – Shaun White

January 13th, 2010 Kyle Barnoff ActionSportsBlips: vote it up! No comments

This is old news, but I was recently sent a link about a collaborative project between Redbull, NBC and Shaun White. The cohort banded together to build a 550 foot long pipe in Silverton, Colorado. The kicker… it included a 600+ square foot foam pit at the bottom!

The size of the pipe and the amount of time and money invested in the project is impressive. It makes one ponder how Red Bull can continue to give away thousands of free cans of product, and have the money left over to invest in stunts like this. A rally car jump on New Year’s eve probably does not hurt sales, but how much publicity will ‘Project X’ get.

Yes, Red Bull is marketing Shaun’s session in in the pipe as a secret endeavor named ‘Project X’. Regardless the questions of the company’s financial stability, the session that Shaun had was impressive. He attempted two different double cork 1080s, a double rodeo and a switch backside 9. NBC is featuring a presentation of Project X on January 30ths at 2pm EST(that is a weird time slot eh?). Some of these tricks are destine to show up during the Olympic halfpipe competition, so check out a preview of them below.

5 of the Most Impressive Music Albums in My Library

September 2nd, 2009 Anthony ActionSportsBlips: vote it up! No comments

What’s good, bloggies?! My name is Anthony Manni and I’ve been a DJ for about 4 years now, therefore I’m always on the search for new music that I like and want to share with the people around me. Being a DJ, I’m heavily partial towards the kind of music that makes me wanna dance, but my taste isn’t limited to that type of music — I’m also a drummer and am very attracted to music with strong instrumentals/vocals. That being said, I’ve got 5 of the most mind blowing albums in my music collection that I would like to share with y’allz. These albums are guaranteed to either amp you up or calm you down, whichever mood you’re feeling — oh, and I highly recommend this music for shreddin’ up the slopes.

Ready for the Weekend - Calvin HarrisCalvin Harris – Ready for the Weekend — This album is incredible; Scotsman Calvin Harris is a true visionary when it comes to dance music. He’s realized the potential of  ’80s disco and mixed that style with some super phat techno beats. Definitely check out this album if you love dancing, techno, or the ’80s! Key songs that’ll get you pumped and feelin’ the groove are “The Rain,” “Stars Come Out,” “Dance Wiv Me,” “Blue,” and “Yeah Yeah Yeah La La La.” So play this album up in the headphones and lay down some steeze on them slopes if you think you’re ready for the weekend.

Justice - CrossJustice – Cross — Another incredibly innovative techno album. The French, heavily Christian duo, Justice, took thousands of samples from popular songs by artists such as 50 Cent, Queen, and Slipknot (along with many others) and chopped them up to make this album. They also throw in some wicked ill “slap bass” riffs to add to the funkyness. This album is absolutely insane.
My top songs on this album: “Phantom Pt. 1 & 2,” “DVNO,” “D.A.N.C.E.,” and “Genesis.”
P.S. – In case you’re wondering where you’ve heard “Genesis” and “D.A.N.C.E.,” “Genesis” has been used for quite a few Cadillac commercials and “D.A.N.C.E.” has a very trippy music video that is often played on MTV.

The Cool Kids - Bake Sale

The Cool Kids – The Bake Sale — “Chuck Inglish” and “Mikey Rocks” make up a rap duo that drops phat beats and comedic rhymes that will cheer you up and chill you out for sure. I snowboard/skate to these guys all the time ’cause their beats are just so dope that I do a little dance every time I land a trick. My top songs on this album: “Bassment Party,” “One, Two, One,” “88,” “What Up Man,” “A Little Bit Cooler,” “What It Is.”

.

LMFAO - Party Rock

LMFAO – Party Rock — I’M IN MIAMI TRIICKK! <– You’ve probably heard that one already, but if not, LMFAO is a party-loving duo with DJs/Rappers “Redfoo” and “Scott Blue.” These two dudes have come up with some of the most outstanding techno beats that I have ever heard, and their rhymes are hilarious! Their innovative style is wicked fresh as well; they’ve invented a new genre of music called “Party Rock;” it’s a mixture between techno and hiphop (techno beats with rap over them). As unusual as that combination sounds, these guys pull it off quite well. Check out these songs and you’ll be rockin’ the party all night long whether your on the slopes with your crew or at the club, also with the crew lol: “I’m in Miami Trick,” “Shots,” “Lil’ Hipster Girl,” “I Am NOT a Whore,” “Yes,” “I shake, I move.” Also check out these Party Rock Remixes by LMFAO: “Love Game,” “Love Lockdown,” “Paranoid,” Hot ‘n’ Cold,” “Boom Boom Pow”

InterpartysystemInnerpartysystem – Innerpartysystem — This band is straight up insane. I saw them live at the Warped Tour in Boston this summer before I even heard about them and they blew me away. Innerpartysystem is an Indie/Techno band that mixes guitars and elaborate drum beats with samplers, synthesizers, and other crazy electronic instruments. This band will totally calm you down and get you in the zone for whatever line your tryin’ to hit on the mountain; the singer’s voice is very chill and the music that backs him up is phat, to the say the least. Check out these songs, you will not be disappointed: “Structure,” “Die Tonight, Live Forever,” “Last Night in Brooklyn,” “This Town, Your Grave,” “Heart of Fire,” “Obsession”

Well, those are my top 5 albums that wow me every time I listen to them. I hope you feel the same way as I do and really enjoy these illmatic compilations of music.
Stay steezy everyone, Peace!

Nitro Circus Theme Song…

September 1st, 2009 Kyle Barnoff ActionSportsBlips: vote it up! No comments

This is old news, but I have received some questions about it lately. The theme song that kicks off each episode of the show is ‘The State of Massachusetts’ by the Dropkick Murphys. The Dropkick Murphys play Irish style music. Check them out, they have many humorous songs about drinking and womanizing.

Trick Tip: Punch your little brother in the FACE.

August 26th, 2009 Kyle Barnoff ActionSportsBlips: vote it up! No comments

How do you Misty?  Easy.  A great method of learning a Misty is to pretend that you are punching your little brother in the face.  If you don’t have a little brother, you can just imagine punching someone shorter than you in the face.  Don’t like Tanner Hall, Simon Dumont, Sammy Carlson or Tom Wallisch?  Pretend to punch one of them in the face… they are all relatively short.  If none of those people work then imagine Mini-Me.

The method in which you punch them is the key.  If you spin left simply imagine that the short person is standing on your left(if you spin right then simply switch each direction).  Place your left hand on their head, which should leave your arm slightly bent.  Make a fist with your right hand and place it in front of you, bent at the elbow.

When you punch your victim, make sure you follow through… you want to do some damage right!?  Try to put your right fist past your left hip and continue to hold that little buggers head.  Make sure your butt comes up so you get inverted… and that should bring around your misty.  Once you get the hang of the spin, try throwing some grabs in there!

Having trouble? Post any questions in the comments!

Trick Tip: Don’t be a Premie!

August 25th, 2009 Kyle Barnoff ActionSportsBlips: vote it up! No comments

Premie.

A Premie is usually a premature baby, but on the hill a Premie is a kid who wants to try a trick they are not ready for.  Many kids are trying to do more advanced tricks before they have mastered smaller tricks.  It is annoying when kids attempt to learn tricks they are not ready for.  Plus, it leads to a higher rate of injury in the parks.

An example.  A kid, lets name him Tommy, watches an amateur rider throw a cork 7.  Tommy’s  biggest trick is a 360, but regardless he asks the amateur how to cork 7.  Tommy is a Premie. This kid is not ready for a cork 7… he does not even know what it feels like to spin a 720.  Tommy should be able to bang out the 7 before he tries anything off axis.  Switch tricks?  Can Tommy ride switch with a normal center of gravity and in control?  Switch unnatural tricks… can Tommy look over his other shoulder while riding switch?

The same goes with rail tricks.  Want to learn a 270 on?  Can Tommy slide the rail unnatural?  Want to hit a rail switch?  Can Tommy ride switch well?

It may sound lame, but the better a rider is at basic and fundemental skills, the more quickly he/she will learn more advanced skills.  There are plenty of poor park days to work on riding switch, sliding rails unnatural and spinning small unnatural spins.  Enuf said.

Woodward Camp to Open in China

August 12th, 2009 Kyle Barnoff ActionSportsBlips: vote it up! No comments

It is official, the popular summer camp is opening a new camp in China.  Woodward Camp is designing a new facility near the capital city of China, Beijing.  The building costs are estimated to be $4 million dollars[1].  The camp will reportedly host all of the same activities it does at its US camps, with the exception of snowboarding and skiing.

Not all of the details seem to be finalized, but with the growing population of the Asian market, Woodward Camp in China will likely be successful.
